Königsblauen are back with DFB Pokal

By: Porter | January 26th, 2009

The wait is over as Schalke return from the long winter break with DFB Pokal tomorrow. Fred Rutten’s club face Carl Zeiss Jena of the third division in the round of sixteen. After a very disappointing first half of the season, Schalke is targeting going the distance:

Fred Rutten said of the match:

“We want to win and go through to the next round.

“Which is why we have to leave no one in any doubt as to our will to win from the opening whistle. We can’t afford to underestimate our opponents even if they do play two divisions below us.

“Jena mustn’t get the feeling at any time that they can beat us. We’re the favourites and we aim to show we are.”

Schalke probably have it the “easiest” of the top clubs in this round “on paper” but Jena will not take this match easy. They continuously show up “big” against top clubs and will be stubborn defensively, so I expect a tough fight.

Kevin Kurányi, Levan Kobiashvili and Orlando Engelaar are all ready for the match although they might be used sparingly with Saturdays match against Hannover 96 looming. Levan Kenia and Christian Pander are still out and will miss the match.

This should be the good start Schalke needs to get season going.
