Manuel Neuer on the season

By: Porter | January 13th, 2009

In a flurry of interviews on the club web-site Manuel Neuer spoke troubled first half:

How would you rate the first half?

MN: “Watching from the sidelines was a difficult time. But I’m not the only one who’s disappointed about the last six months. We’re only in seventh place and then we’re behind Dortmund in the standings… we had hoped to be closer to the top. We dropped too many points.”

The club want back into the Champions League. Is that still possible given that third place is six points away?

MN: “I don’t think talking about it helps. We have to deal with the situation, take it as it is and make the best of it. First of all a good start is important. We need a good run to make up ground on the top teams.”

Is it more difficult at the top this season? There are some new rivals that now one reckoned with

MN: “In the Bundesliga you mustn’t make the mistake of underestimating any single team, that’s why I’m not surprised. Most matches are really close, even the struggling teams are hard to beat. There are a lot of quality teams, and some — Wolfsburg for example — have developed well over the last few years.”

Of the problems the club is facing and one that obviously wouldn’t relate to a goalkeeper is the lack of attacking creativity. While on paper it would not seem likely that a Fred Rutten-led squad wouldn’t have similar attacking flourish as his former club FC Twente, they have unfortunately sacrificed defending for attacking spirit. Hopefully that will take a turn into the second half of the season.
